STEP #3:
|
TAKING BODY MEASUREMENTS:
In order to determine your pattern size, you first need to take your body measurements. There are three basic pattern measurements that you need to begin with for a beginner pattern. SEE DIAGRAM on the left to determine where to measure yourself. These measuements will give you the basic information you need to make a basic clothing item. For more tailored clothing, it will require more detailed measurments.
|
BUST / CHEST MEASURMENT:FOR GIRLS:
The BUST MEASURMENT refers to the fullest part of the bust measured just under the arms and around the fullest part of the bust. FOR BOYS: The CHEST MEASUREMENT refers to the upper body. This measurement is taken just below the arms AS PICTURED. WAIST MEASURMENT:The WAIST MEASURMENT should be taken at the NARROWEST PART OF THE WAIST. Sometimes people think their waist is lower because they wear their pants lower on their waist. This is not your waist. We call this the PREFERRED WAIST MEASURMENT. The Natural waist is where you need to measure. this is the narrowest part of the waist.
HIP MEASURMENT:The HIP MEASURMENT should be taken at the fullest part of the hips. If you straighten your back and lean forward, notice where you bend. that is where you put the measuring tape to measure the fullest part of your hips.

DETERMINE YOUR OWN PATTERN SIZE:
After you have finished taking your body measurements, you need to determine what size pattern to buy. It is normal for your measurements to to be different from the standard measurement chart. If you measurments do not align with the standard measurments. Dress/Shirt Size is determined differently that Pant/Skirt Size. NOTE THE GUIDELINES BELOW.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PATTERN CONTAINS THE CORRECT SIZE:
Patterns come in different sizes. After you have selected your pattern, before you purchase it, you must determine what size you need to buy, and then you need to check the envelope to determine what size that envelope contains.
Patterns envelopes generally contain MULTIPLE SIZES in one envelope. This does not mean that ALL SIZES are in that envelope.
After you have determined your size, and selected your pattern, you need to make sure that YOUR SIZE is in the envelope you have in your hand. If you look at the pattern envelope in the upper RIGHT HAND corner on the FRONT of the envelope, you will see the sizes that are included in this envelope. SEE PHOTO ON THE LEFT |
